The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago, it is now a breathtaking wildlife haven spanning 260 square kilometers.
Because the crater floor is enclosed by steep walls, the wildlife here does not migrate. It is one of the few places in Africa where you have a very high chance of spotting the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and the endangered Black Rhino) in a single day. This full-day excursion from Arusha is the perfect express safari for those short on time but hungry for world-class wildlife encounters.
Your dedicated Z&K safari guide will pick you up early from your hotel in Arusha. We begin the scenic 3-hour drive passing through local farming villages and up into the lush highlands of Karatu.
Arrive at the Loduare Gate for registration. After a brief stop at the viewpoint to take in the sheer scale of the caldera, we descend 600 meters down the steep walls onto the crater floor to begin our game drive.
We pause the game drive to enjoy a packed picnic lunch overlooking the Ngoitokok hippo pool. Watch the hippos surface and keep an eye out for opportunistic black kites.
After a full day of tracking lions, rhinos, and massive elephant bulls, we begin our ascent up the crater wall and make the drive back, dropping you off at your hotel in Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport by early evening.
